Photographer of the week: Jimmy Hoffman

This week, we will take a closer look at Jimmy Hoffman. The nature photographer, who's speciality is exacly just that; taking a closer look. His detailed macro photos have captivated viewers by the thousands. Thanks to Yvette Depaepe for conducting the interview. You will find more photos at the end of the article.

Briefly tell us about yourself, your hobbies and other jobs.

My name is Jimmy Hoffman.  I'm single, 53 years old, dutchborn and nowadays living in Spain. I love the natural world, photography, traveling, music and art.  I´m a professional artist, specialized in wood and linoleum printing.

Describe your overall photographic vision.

In my images, I try to draw the viewer into another world where art, esthetics, technique and humor meet.

What first attracted you to photography?

My father was an amateur photographer who liked to capture plants and animals on film. He was a hobby diver and enjoyed especially underwater photography. He had a number of nature books with beautiful and colorful pictures. By viewing those pictures, my interest in photography was aroused.

Why are you so drawn to macro photography?

Since my childhood I have been fascinated by nature and especially the insect world. Why? I don´t know. Apparently it's in my genes. It is a more or less hidden world of wonderful, tiny creatures that I want to make visible.

What is more important to you, the story behind an image or the technical perfection?

For me the story is more important, but the technical flaws should not detract from it too much.

What generally is your relationship to your subject matter beyond being an observer?

To me it´s a joy to observe insects and their natural behaviour like development, courtship and so on and trying to capture it in a picture. Every time it´s a wonder to me when I witness, for example, a butterfly emerging from its pupa or a larva hatching from an egg.

Who are your favorite photographers and more importantly, how has your appreciation of their work affected how you approach your own photography?

The nature and macro photographers from Indonesia are my favorites. Their use of color, light and composition are a big inspiration source to me. But, of course, I also can learn a lot from photographers with other subject matter here on 1X.

Are there any specific directions that you would like to take your photography in the future or any specific goals that you wish to achieve?

I just want to keep improving my skills and trying to develop my own unique style.

Is there anything else you wish to add?

A big thank you to 1X  for giving me the opportunity to showcase my work.
