Marco Pozzi: Photographer of the week

Marco Pozzi's love for photography and travelling led him over the years to his absolute passion for wildlife. Every trip is an opportunity to capture wild animals with respect in their natural environment with great respect and admiration. Look by yourself and listen to what Marco has to tell us in this fine interview.

“Sleeping beauty”

Briefly tell us about yourself, your hobbies and other jobs, Marco.
I studied Business Administration at the Bocconi University and I currently work in an Investment Bank in Milan, where I was born in 1970 and where I live. Apart from photography, my hobbies are travelling, sports and staying with my family.

How has your history and life experiences affected your photography?
My interest in photography started when I was a child. I’m a child of amateur photographers and since the age of 5, I used to follow my dad in the dark room at home.

“Young Prince”

With the years, my interest became passion.. and the passion for photography joined the passion for travelling around the World and for wildlife. In recent years, I discovered Africa, which became soon my biggest passion.

Now I'm sharing these passions with my wife and try to share them with my daughter too.

I started with landscapes, street and reportage.. but over the years – thanks to some travels in marvellous places around the World- I got so found of wildlife that now I try to photograph whenever and wherever I can.

What is more important to you, the mood,/story behind your images or the technical perfection?
Technical aspects are important for sure, but I am not a maniac … I think that photography is first of all communication, emotion, passion, light, .. art.

Do you prepare carefully the locations where you are intending to photograph?

What is your most important advice to a beginner in Wildlife Photography and how do you get started?
Study the work of other photographers, in books and on internet. 1x is perfect for this. Of course if you are a beginner you need to learn the basics. A lot of courses are nowadays available for this purpose.
For wildlife photography you need a lot of patience and the right spirit to start.

Who are your favourite photographers and more importantly, how has your appreciation of their work affected how you approach your own photography?
I love many wildlife photographers such as Frans Lanting, Art Wolfe, Steve Bloom, Tim Laman, Paul Nicklen, Federico Veronesi and many others.
I do appreciate a lot  Marsel van Oosten  I discovered here on 1X.
When it comes to reportages, my favourite photographer is Master Steve McCurry .
I also read lots of books and look at tons of pictures to be inspired.
But I think I found my own identity which I try to follow on the field.

Is there any specific photo taken by another photographer that has inspired you a lot and why?
A lots of photos inspired me during the years and some others inspire me right now. There are too many, I am not able to choose one in particular.

Are there any specific directions that you would like to take your photography in the future or any specific goals that you wish to achieve?
I’m very found of wildlife photography (my next travel will be in Quebec next February) and recently I rediscovered the beauty of reportage.

Describe your favourite photograph taken by you and why it is special to you?
My favourite photograph – published here on 1x - is “Dogs in the storm”.

“dogs in the storm”

It was taken in Churchill, Canada and in my opinion represents the essence of the Big North.

Is there anything else you wish to add and what do you think about 1X as a home base for your work?
I think 1x is really a great photography site. It’s special because of the accurate selection with as a result that all photos are original and of high quality. For this reason I thank and congratulate the entire team of 1x and Yvette Depaepe for the opportunity she gave me do this interview.
