The making of 'Night Assemblage' by Marek Boguszak

by Editor Michel Romaggi in collaboration with the author, Marek Boguszak.
Edited and published by Yvette Depaepe, the 26th of October 2023

Marek’s colourful abstracts are amazing. I was eager to find out how he proceeds to obtain these wonderful harmonious compositions full of colours. Thank you very much for allowing us to enter your photographic world, dear Marek.

'Night Assemblage'

Can you tell us some editing secrets about 'Night assemblage'. Which equipment and settings did you use? What were the different steps to obtain this mysterious result?

I use a Nikon D850, with Tele lenses from 80 mm up to 500 mm, a tripod, ISO 64, aperture 8-14, and time given by the correct exposure.

There is a lot of post-processing. i.e. 'creative editing’.
I crop, enhance or suppress contrast and colours, use solarization, increase or decrease clarity, de-haze, etc., and apply local adjustments, and then I crop again and again. I work with Lightroom and Nik Color Efex.

All your images are colourful abstracts. What led you to this kind of image?

I do not like looking back, so I have painfully switched from analogue B&W to digital colour. I have found out that colour and abstract are – for me personally – much more exciting to explore than ‘traditional’ landscape photos. It also enables me to better express my mood and feelings.

What are the subjects you photograph? How do you choose them?

In the last few years, I have been attached to landscape photography in Czechia and attractive locations such as Tuscany, Lofoten, Faroe Islands, Death Valley, and the Abu Dhabi desert. Recently I have focused on sand dunes which fascinate me with their perfect balance, harmony, and endless variations. I simply go to the desert at dawn or sunset and immerse myself in its beauty – no need to choose, just let the beauty envelops me.

To end this short but interesting tutorial, please tell us about yourself and how you got into photography?

Like many, I started taking photos in my teens. I was amazed by Czech masters such as Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke, and others. I was shooting mainly in Prague, a bit of landscape and abstract, and I was doing all the darkroom work myself. Then I got my family and my professional life and came back to photography full-time about 10 years ago.

Very manuy thanks Patrick!
A captivating and inspiring universe, in which abstraction appears to me as a tool to highlight the core of nature - balance, continuity, evolution, permanence, breathtaking beauty, with an aura of mystery. Congratulations and many thanks for this beautiful article!
