by Yvette Depaepe
Published the 23rd of October 2023

Adam Fritzen excells in architecture and abstract works. He is always driven by playing with lines, shapes, light and shadows. He consider it as a welcome outlet for his creativity. Let's walk together through some of his beautiful images and learn a little more about him through this interview.

'Decoration'

Hello, first of all I would like to thank you, dear Yvette, for inviting me to the interview. I am honoured.
My Name is Adam Fritzen and I live in Cologne/Germany. I have always been interested in photography. Since I'm retired, I have time to focus more intensively on photography. It is not just a hobby and also has become a way of life.

For many of us photography is either a hobby or a way of life. How would you define your relationship with photography?

For me, photography is a good way to relax. I love discovering the architecture in my city again and again.

What would be the most important experience so far that has influenced your steps in photography?

The transition from the analogue age to the digital age.

How do you maintain and grow your passion for photography?

I still have many photography goals that I want to achieve. There are always new motifs to explore.

Why are you so drawn by Architecture and Abstract Photography?

Architecture and abstract photography is exciting for me. Creating a good photo always is a dare. I'm constantly inspired by playing with lines, shapes, light and shadows during the editing process. Architecture and abstract photography are a challenge to showcase creativity.

What is more important to you, the mood,/story behind your images or the technical perfection?

For me, a good photo includes both, the mood and technical perfection. They are essential as a solid foundation for being a good photographer.

What generally is your relationship to your subject matter beyond being an observer? Do you prepare carefully the locations where you are intending to photograph?

I prepare myself choosing a subject and finding out whether, for example, a photo permit is requires if I want to take photos in a close building. But when I'm taking photos in my city, I have to take into account different conditions such as the weather or the best time of day to shoot.

What gear do you use (camera, lenses, bag)?

I have the Fuji XT20, Fuji XS10 and various lenses.

What software do you use to process your images?

Adobe Photoshop

Can you tell us something more about your work flow?
I think I answered about my workflow in the previous questions.

What is your most important advice to a beginner in Architecture and Abstract Photography and how do you get started?

My advice : be patient, don‘t expect everything to be perfect. Good preparation and research are important.  And of course,  learning for other photographers.

What would be your favourite photo from the last years? Please tell us the story behind it.

That is a difficult question. Every picture is a favourite picture to me. If a had to choose, it would be the photo titled 'Lines'. It‘s the first photo I uploaded which was awarded. It was exciting to find out whether I would meet the demands of 1x. The recognition motivated me to continue presenting my photos.

'Lines'

Who are your favourite photographers or mentors whose works have influenced you and your photography?

There are many amazing photographers on 1x who will continue to inspire me.

We almost reach the end of this interview and I would kindly ask you to share with us your future plans or photographic projects you would like to be involved in.

I still consider photography as my hobby.

Is there anything else you wish to add  and what do you think about 1X as a home base for your work?

For me, 1x is an ideal platform for presenting my work. It was a very good decision to join this community.

A big thank you to my wife for her support.
And also to the entire 1x team.
