Buildings - Timeless Human Experiences

'Kilchurn' by Wojciech Kruczynsky

I came across this thought-provoking passage in an unlikely place – a Western novel “Rides a Stranger”, written by Bill Brooks:

“Thing with old buildings is they got a history same as any man – the history of all who lived in them - the weddings and funerals that took place in them, the love and hate that hid between their walls, and that was something that always interested me, the history of buildings.”

Likewise, buildings offer fascinating subjects for photography – from towering monuments to humble homes to ancient ruins, every picture has the ability to tell their stories. We can capture the play of light and shadow, reflect their architectural beauty, highlighting the lines, shapes and textures but, without the background story, it may become just another postcard picture. All buildings, big or small, have some kind of a story, whether they reflect aspirations, triumphs and struggles through time, connecting us with the past.

They may symbolise:

emotions
new beginnings
historical events
births and deaths
love
hope
religion
status
despair
artistry
evoking memories of trials and tribulations of the past.

Photographing buildings is a way of capturing their spirit and history, so let’s do our best to bring this out in our photographs.

Here is a collection of works by 1x photographers that exemplify the essence of this type of photography.
